Batteries are vital in our society, an upper level in the scale of ability for humankind. They give us the power to store and manipulate energy. The subject is such that I divided it in several parts. The first part is dedicated to the lead-acid battery restoration. They are the most broadly used rechargeable batteries today and replacing them has become quite expensive due to the constantly rising cost of the lead and lately the sulfuric acid. We find these types of batteries in our cars, electric cars, golf cars, trucks, motorcycles, airplanes, boats, forklifts, solar systems etc.

Now, to bring an easier understanding about how to restore a battery, we are going to start by explaining simply and briefly about what a battery is, how it works and why it fails.

Let's start by defining what a battery is; in general a battery is a device in which chemical energy is transformed into electrical energy. For practical reasons batteries are classified in two types: a "primary battery", when the battery can only be use once (disposable) because the chemical reaction that happens inside is not reversible by simple means and the "secondary battery", when the chemical reaction can be reversed by applying electrical energy to the battery (rechargeable). This reverse reaction capability is what enables the batteries to be reused as storage devices.

How Does a Battery Work and why batteries fail?

The simplest batteries, better call cells, are composed of two lead plates, one charged positive (lead oxide) and one charged negative (lead), with a chemical solution between them, generally a watery solution of sulfuric acid. The most complex ones have a larger number of cells but the basic principle is the same.

Batteries produce a direct current (DC); it always flows in the same direction. When you use a battery (discharge) the chemical reaction is releasing electric energy through the negative terminal. The reaction of the lead and lead oxide with the sulfuric acid produce lead sulfate, water and releases electric energy (electrons). If you discharge the battery too much you will have mostly water and lead sulfate that in such conditions tends to crystallize.

When you charge a battery, you put electrons (electric energy) into the battery through the negative terminal, that energy activates the lead sulfate breaking it into lead and lead oxide and sulfuric acid. That causes a chemical reaction which stores electricity.

The electric current is produced by the presence of a surplus of electrons from the negative plate that flow toward the positive plate that has a deficiency of electrons via the sulfuric acid.

In summary the chemical reaction which stores electricity in the battery involves transformation of lead sulfate in an aqueous environment into the lead on the negative plate, and the lead oxide on the positive plate, and an aqueous solution of sulfuric acid. Conversely, when the battery is used (discharged) the interaction of the lead and lead oxide with the sulfuric acid produces, lead sulfate, water and electric energy (electrons). These reactions work in both directions.

There is one tragic flaw! Lead can combine with sulfate in two different ways. The first, discussed above, is beneficial. The second way forms a crystal which does have very little or no capability to efficiently conduct electricity and cannot easily be converted back to lead or lead oxide. Every discharge leaves a fine layer of crystals on the plates which little by little reduce the available plate surface (battery's reaction area) and consequently the battery's potential to store and release electricity. As a wider and thicker area is covered with this lead sulfate crystal, the battery loses power until it is not longer worth using.

What can be done about it? How to restore a Battery?

Before covering what things can be done to restore a battery I find necessary to clarify a bit further about two divisions on the types of lead-acid batteries. The Deep Batteries and Starting Batteries, each has their own peculiarities and applications.

Starting batteries are the ones used in Automobiles; these batteries have generally many thin plates. They make the battery capable of providing as much current as it is possible in a relatively small unit. This kind of batteries is designed to be drained small amounts before they are charged again.

Deep-cycle lead acid batteries have thicker plates to aid durability, they resist more deep discharge cycles than the starting ones. Deep batteries are used in Golf carts, electric cars, are recommended for solar systems, etc. A deep cycle battery is designed to provide a moderate amount of current for a long period of time.

Car batteries are not designed to deep discharge. When you do deep discharging, active material on the plates is dropped. If you have thin plates very soon you will have holes in the plates and permanent reduction of the plate surface, consequently reduced current output and storage.

If you are in an auto collision, forget who is at fault for a minute. The insurance company will try to fix your car with used parts. They will not try, I was too kind. They will fix your car with used parts! How can this be legal? I believe this is highly unfair, but yet it is perfectly legal. Insurance companies around America are cutting cost and fixing cars with cheaper parts. Forget the original manufactured parts; you get some nice Taiwanese parts. What happen if there are none available? You will get a nice recycled part form a junk yard!
In other, words, your BMW will not get original BMW parts; it will get something of less quality. Adjusters will argue that this used part, second hand parts, re manufactured parts, Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM), or/and after market parts are as good, if not better than the original ones. I believe this is a questionable claim.

I hate to report this is very "normal" for all insurance companies. Your carrier and the carrier of the person that hit you will do the same thing. They will price out the cheapest parts to fix your car. It gets worse. The insurance carrier will also make sure that you do not go to the dealership for the repairs. You have to go to a body shop that has a "reasonable and necessary" labor rate. Insurance companies argue that the dealership hourly rate is much higher the average body shop in your area and therefore it is unreasonable. They only owe for reasonable expenses, so you will be holding the bag. It does not matter that you have auto collision coverage and full coverage. The insurance company will fight you over this.

How can they get away with this? Insurance companies are very good litigators and lobbyist. The theory is that insurance companies owe you to "put you back in the position you were before the accident." They argue that at the time of the accident you had a "used vehicle" (unless you just drove off the lot). Since your car is used, then your parts are used. Therefore, they will pay only for used parts. If no used parts are available, then they will "allow" for new parts, but only OEM parts (manufactured in countries outside the US).

So what are your remedies? How can you protect yourself? This is one is a hard to fight because most attorneys will not get involved with any auto collisions that does not involve some sort of bodily injury. So you are going to have to fight by yourself. You can do one of two things. You could pay for the difference between the second hand parts that the insurance company wants to buy and the original parts that you need. You also would have to pay for the difference between the labor rates.

You can also ask for a letter of guarantee directly from the insurance company. A letter of guarantee is a document where the insurance company agrees to fix your car in the event that you have any problems with the parts and/or the workmanship of the body shop. The damages must be directly related to the auto collision in question. Insurance companies will try to look on the other direction when you ask for this letter. They will tell you to ask the body shop directly. Do not let them do that. You want assurances form the insurance company. They are the ones that are telling you that these parts are as good as new. If you ask and you are firm, you could get them to give you written warranties.

Bench Crunches

First, perform bench crunches to strengthen your upper abdominal muscles. Lie on the floor with your feet on a bench and your legs bent at a 90-degree angle. Place your hands at your temples. Raise your head and shoulders until your body is at a 45-degree angle with the floor. Return to the starting position.

Avoid pulling on your head during this exercise because you could strain your neck. Also, exhale when contracting and keep the pace of the movement slow in order to maintain proper form.

Seated Leg Tucks

Seated leg tucks are great for developing the lower abs. Sit sideways on a bench and grasp the edges of the bench for support. With bent knees, raise your legs slightly, and then straighten them. A good way to ensure proper balance is to lean back when needed.

Next, lift your knees toward your chest while keeping your lower legs pointed downward, and flex your abs as hard as you can. For better results, keep the tension in your abdominal muscles throughout the entire movement.

Cable Crunches

The third movement will work your oblique muscles, which are on the sides of your body. Side-to-side rope crunches are great because the weight can be adjusted to each individual's strength level. Use a tricep pushdown cable and comfortably kneel facing the machine with both cables in your hands.

The cables should now be on each side of you above your head. Alternatively crunch down the weight to each knee. The contraction should be controlled and performed slowly to maintain good form and maximize the work on the obliques.

Most of us assume that the bigger a vehicle is - the safer it is. This is true to a certain degree. However, safety engineers have been able to pack a tremendous amount of design features into today's smaller cars that decrease the chances that you will be seriously injured in a crash. The Smart Car is a great example of this fact.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IHS) has recently performed comprehensive crash testing on this vehicle and it fared better than most people would have expected for it's size.

In frontal and side impact collisions, the Smart Car received a good rating. This is actually the highest possible rating under the IHS standards. It received an acceptable rating in rear end collisions. IHS performs an off-set frontal crash test which simulates most real-world auto collisions. In a pure frontal impact test performed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration the Smart Car received a five star rating for driver protection and a three star rating for passenger protection.

So, it appears as though the Smart Car designers have done a remarkable job at making this car a safe choice for many drivers. If I were looking for a vehicle to be used primarily on city streets with little to no highway driving, I would consider this as an option. If I needed a car to drive on highways, or if I needed to transport more than two people, I would look at other options such as the Honda Civic, which has always maintained an impressive safety record along with excellent fuel efficiency.

But the exit by Amtek group look good from the value the Amtek sold 5% stake in Amtek Crankshafts (India) for Rs. 22.38 Cr and 5% in Amtek Ring Gears for Rs. 20.4 Cr.

There are major acquisitions by the Indian Auto component maker in the past few years but for an undisclosed amount. So technically we are not able to evaluate whether it is best deals for the seller or not in the market terms. But with the amount invested by the Amtek in 2007 in this subsidiaries and amount that would be realized according to our evaluation as above seems to be a good deal.

CONCLUSION:

The time of investment and the time of realization, in value creation for the investors are handled almost perfectly by the management of the Amtek Group. The partial exit from both companies and the investment by the group in the German-based company show that the group does not want to leave the old investment but wants to expand in the new geographical areas as and when opportunities knock the door. Here the management has to change the focus from financial investors to strategic investors and also to curtail the highly leveraged balance sheet.

According to corporate consultant Alix Partners, Mexico has leapfrogged China to be ranked as the cheapest country in the world for companies looking to manufacture products for the U.S. market. India is now No. 2, followed by China and then Brazil. In fact, Mexicos cost advantages and has become so cheap that even Chinese companies are moving there to capitalize on the trade advantages that come from geographic proximity.

The influx of Chinese manufacturers began early in the decade, as China-based firms in the cellular telephone, television, textile and automobile sectors began to establish maquiladora operations in Mexico. By 2005, there were 20-25 Chinese manufacturers operating in such Mexican states Chihuahua, Tamaulipas and Baja. The investments were generally small, but the operations had managed to create nearly 4,000 jobs, Enrique Castro Septien, president of the Consejo Nacional de la Industria Maquiladora de Exportacion (CNIME), told the SourceMex news portal in a 2005 interview.

Chinas push into Mexico became more concentrated, with China-based automakers Zhongxing Automobile Co., First Automotive Works (in partnership with Mexican retail/media heavyweight Grupo Salinas), Geely Automobile Holdings (PINK: GELYF) and ChangAn Automobile Group Co. Ltd . (the Chinese partner of Ford Motor Co.) and Suzuki Motor Corp.), all announced plans to place automaking factories in Mexico.

Not all the plans would come to fruition. But Geelys plan called for a three-phase project that would ultimately involve a $270 million investment and have a total annual capacity of 300,000 vehicles . ChangAn wants to churn out 50,000 vehicles a year. Both companies are taking these steps with the ultimate goal of selling cars to U.S. consumers.

Mexicos allure as a production site that can serve the U.S. market isnt limited to China-based suitors. U.S. companies are increasingly realizing that Mexico is a better option than China. Analysts are calling it nearshoring or reverse globalization. But the reality is this: With wages on the rise in China, ongoing worries about whipsaw energy and commodity prices, and a dollar-yuan relationship thats destined to get much uglier before it has a chance of improving, manufacturers with an eye on the American market are increasingly realizing that Mexico trumps China in virtually every equation the producers run.

Suddenly, the labor cost advantage China enjoyed wasnt enough to overcome the costs of shipping finished goods thousands of miles from Asia to North America. And that reality kick-started the concept of nearshoring, concluded an investment research report by Canadian investment bank CIBC World Markets Inc.

In a world of triple-digit oil prices, distance costs money, the CIBC research analysts wrote. And while trade liberalization and technology may have flattened the world, rising transport prices will once again make it rounder.

Placing certain child seats on the front passenger seat is designed to result in the automatic deactivation of the front seat passenger's airbag. In some cases, the sensing system may misinterpret a properly seated small adult as one of these specific child seats, resulting in deactivation of the front passenger airbag when the airbag might be beneficial for the adult, increasing the risk of injury in a crash.

DaimlerChrysler is recalling 270,958 MY 2005 Town and Country and Dodge Caravan minivans originally sold in or currently registered in the 27 states plus the District of Columbia that use greater amounts of salt for winter road deicing. The up-front (UF) airbag sensors that contain brass bushings installed in these vehicles may corrode and crack allowing water to enter the sensor. These sensors provide enhanced air bag performance in certain types of frontal crashes. In one of these crashes, with one or both of the vehicle's UF sensors inoperative, the occupants will not benefit from the enhanced air bag protection that these sensors would provide.

Hyundai de Puerto Rico is recalling 2,967 MY 2005-2007 Tucson vehicles. Static airbag deployment testing conducted by NHTSA using fifth percentile female dummies indicated that a small stature adult driver not wearing a seat belt and involved in a frontal or near frontal crash, the deployment of the driver air bag may result in an insufficient margin of compliance as measured by the test dummy used in the NHTSA test. This can cause increased risk of injury to the driver under certain crash conditions.

June 2007

DaimlerChrysler is recalling 798 MY 2007-2008 Sebring and MY 2008 Dodge Avenger vehicles. The front seat track position sensors utilized for the air bag system may not function properly. This could increase the risk of injury to front seat occupants during certain crash conditions.

DaimlerChrysler is recalling 39 MY 2007 Dodge and Freightliner Sprinter 2500 and 3500 trucks. The window airbag module diffuser material may contain hairline cracks. In the case of a crash with a trigger signal for the window airbag module, it is possible that such a diffuser may crack at the beginning of the airbag activation.

As one can see from this small sampling of the defective airbag recalls that have been instituted either voluntarily by auto makers, or at the insistence of the NHTSA, there are many occasions in which one or many of the airbags installed in a vehicle will not operate as intended and therefore be a defective airbag that might cause an airbag failure in an accident.

There are advantages and disadvantages with night vision devices. I will go through both of these area and will lean towards more advantages than disadvantages. Just having the ability to see in the dark is the biggest advantage point of all. When you read on you will see that night visions main purpose was for the military so I will spend most of my time in this area.

The engineers and scientists at the US Armys Communications-Electronics Command (CECOM) Night Vision & Electronic Sensors Directorate (NVESD) have discovered ways to capture available electro-magnetic radiation outside that portion of the spectrum visible to the human eye and have developed equipment to enable the American soldier to fight as well at night as during the day and to "Own the Night". Night vision devices provide night fighters with the ability to see, maneuver and shoot at night or during periods of reduced visibility. The Army used two different types of Night vision devices image intensifiers and thermals. Image-Intensifying Devices are based upon light amplification and must have some light available. These devices can amplify the available light from 2,000 to 5,000 times. Thermal Forward-Looking Infrared (FLIR) detectors sometimes called "sensors" work by sensing the temperature difference between an object and its environment. FLIR systems are installed on certain combat vehicles and helicopters.

Night Vision Goggles are electro-optical devices that intensify (or amplify) existing light instead of relying on a light source of their own. Image intensifiers capture ambient light and amplify it thousands of times by electronic means to display the battlefield to a soldier via a phosphor display such as night vision goggles. This ambient light comes from the stars, moon or sky glow from distant manmade sources, such as cities. The devices are sensitive to a broad spectrum of light, from visible to infrared (invisible). Users do not look through Night Vision Goggles, you look at the the amplified electronic image on a phosphor screen.
Light enters the Night Vision Goggles through an objective lens and strikes a photo cathode powered by a high energy charge from the power supply. The energy charge accelerates across a vacuum inside the intensifier and strikes a phosphor screen where the image is focused. The eyepiece magnifies the image.

A soldier can conduct his combat missions without any active illumination sources using only image intensifiers. The main advantages of image intensifiers as night vision devices are their small size, light weight, low power requirements and low cost. These attributes have enabled image intensifier goggles for head-worn, individual soldier applications and resulted in hundreds of thousands of night vision goggles to be procured by the US Army. Research and development continues today on image intensifiers in the areas of longer wavelength spectral response, higher sensitivity, larger fields of view and increased resolution.

The view through Night vision devices can be a lot like looking down a tunnel. Your normal field of view is almost 190 degrees but that is cut down to 40 degrees with Night vision devices. That side -- or "peripheral" -- vision youre accustomed to, and from which you often see dangers, is just not there. To adjust for that you must constantly turn your head to scan for the dangers on either side of you that you cant see in your narrow field of view. Normally you use both eyes (binocular vision) to pick up cues to help estimate the distance and depth of an abject. However, with Night vision devices you are essentially using one eye (monocular) vision, which can pose real problems. For example, when you are wearing NVDs and you view two objects of different sizes that are side-by-side, the larger object appears to be nearer. When you view overlapping objects through a Night vision device, the one that is in front "appears" to be nearer maybe much more so than is true. In addition, some objects viewed through Night Vision Goggles may appear to be farther away than they actually are. The reason for that is that we tend to associate the loss of detail sharpness with distance. On the other hand, a light source that is not part of a terrain feature may look closer than it actually is. Its important to be aware of these potential problems and that Night Vision Goggle users tend to overestimate distance and underestimate depth .

From an accounting point of view the activities of manufacturing and trading enterprises are very similar, especially their administration, sales and financing activities.
